Our Mission

Not all homes should have a dog but all dogs should have a home.

The goal of Colorado Herding Dog Rescue is to help place Australian Shepherds, Border Collies and other herding breeds in loving, permanent homes. We are a small group of dedicated volunteers who put our hearts, souls and time into finding forever homes for these intelligent and loyal working breeds. The three founders of the non-profit CHDR have a combined experience of 45+ years in rescue and have saved over 750 dogs.

Some of us compete in dog sports like agility, obedience, rally and herding with our Aussies. While others of us simply love the breeds and enjoy helping them. We all feel a responsibility to help herding dogs live their best life.

We are completely foster-based, meaning all of our dogs stay in one of our volunteer's home until a forever home is found. Colorado Herding Dog Rescue fosters and places dogs specifically in the state of Colorado. We have relationships with a number of shelters, and rescue dogs from Kansas, Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico. We also work with local shelters in Colorado.

Colorado Herding Dog Rescue is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization and registered as a Colorado nonprofit organization.
As an animal welfare organization, CHDR is licensed in Colorado under the Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act (PACFA).
